Transition Announcement

Official Communication, June 17 2010

The University of Victoria currently supports two learning management systems: Moodle and Blackboard. The version of Blackboard currently licensed by the University, CE 8, is being phased out by Blackboard Inc. Our current license will expire in mid-2012. Effectively, this means that we are phasing out Blackboard at UVic and moving to a single LMS. Moodle was chosen due to its growing use on campus, popularity, versatility, ability to customize, and many interactive features.

The last term in which Blackboard can be used to teach is Summer 2011. As of this term (September 2010), you have a whole year in which to familiarize yourself with Moodle's powerful feature set, clean up your course content, and explore adding new dynamic material (podcasts, video, blogs) -- so start your transition planning now. We are here to answer your questions and offer advice and guidance. This website will be continually updated with information and resources so please check back often.

Transition support and training information

All UVic instructors will be supported throughout the transition period. Instructors and TAs can access the following support:

  • Moodle workshops: register for a workshop to learn how to prepare your resources for Moodle (Moodle 099: Pre-Planning), explore the features of Moodle (Moodle 099: Features Demo) and how to build your Moodle course and use many of the basic features (Moodle 101: Fundamentals).
  • Online Moodle Support documentation: explore our online support documentation (which includes text, audio, and video resources) to learn more about the many features of Moodle, and how to create an online course with opportunities for rich interaction.
  • One-on-one consultation: contact the Moodle Support team if you wish to schedule a one-on-one consultation with one of our knowledgeable team members. You must have completed a Moodle 101: Fundamentals workshop prior to requesting a consultation.

Initial work has begun as of July 2010 and will be completed by August 2011. We will update this website as progress continues on this project.
