Learning Systems Workshops

Learning Systems offers many Moodle workshops to help you explore how to use Moodle to create an effective online learning space for your courses. From introducing you to Moodle and how to prepare your resources, to how to build your course, integrate rich media, and use assignments and grades. All workshops are open to UVic instructors, TAs, and administrative staff.

The chart below shows the various workshops that are offered, and the level associated with each. It is not necessary to complete the workshops in a particular order, but we do highly recommend that you complete the Moodle 101: Fundamentals (formerly Let's Moodle: Getting Started) workshop before progressing to any of the workshops in the 200 or 300 level. The workshops in the 300 level are considered more advanced than those at the 200 level.

Moodle 099: Pre-Planning (face-to-face or online)

Moodle 099: PRE-PlANNING

If you're brand new to Moodle, this workshop is for you! We will introduce you to many resources and tools to help you prepare your materials for Moodle. This workshop can be taken in a face-to-face classroom environment, or through an online, self-paced course.
Note: This course was formerly known as Planning to Use Moodle.

We will cover:

  • What is Moodle?
  • Features
  • How to request a Moodle shell
  • Cross-listing
  • Planning your course
  • Copyright considerations
  • Preparing your files and images (converting Word and PowerPoint to PDF, editing images, etc), and how to zip a folder of documents and upload to Moodle
  • Next steps for learning how to build a Moodle course

Moodle 099: Features Demo (Online)

Moodle 099: Moodle Features Demo

This fully online demo course allows instructors to explore the features available within Moodle to distribute content and create activities. Although you are an Instructor, TA, or Admin staff, you will complete this course in the student role.

You will explore:

  • Resource tools available in Moodle such as: text pages, web pages, external links, directories, and image galleries
  • Activity Modules available in Moodle such as: discussion forums, assignments, glossary, feedback, media player, database, podcast, quiz, blog, wiki, chat, and choice
  • Examples, uses, and links to online documentation to set up and use each potential course component

To complete this course you must (1) review all content, (2) complete Tasks you find within each area, and finally (3) take and pass the timed 20 question quiz. Once successful, you will be issued an online certificate of completion.

Moodle 101: Fundamentals      (formerly Let's Moodle: Getting Started)

Moodle 101: Fundamentals

This workshop will teach you the fundamentals of Moodle and get you started building your Moodle course. This workshop can be taken in a face-to-face classroom environment, or through online, self-paced courses (Moodle 101A, 101B, and 101C).
Note: This course was formerly known as Let's Moodle: Getting Started.

We will cover:

  • Navigating around your course
  • Basic format and settings
  • Allowing access
  • Adding TAs
  • Course announcements
  • Updating your profile
  • Adding basic content such as PDFs, PowerPoints, images, and web links

What does this course cover?

Moodle 101B: Adding Resources (Online)

 

This online, self-paced course provides you with information on how to add a variety of different content to your course along with some design and good practices. Specifically it covers all the 'add a resource' components and their uses:

  • Add a label
  • Add a lightbox (image) gallery
  • Compose a text page
  • Compose a web page
  • Link to a file or website
  • Display a folder

Moodle 201: Getting the Most from Resources & Activities

This workshop will introduce course set-up and layout ideas that you can implement to create an effective online learning environment in Moodle. We will use these tips, tricks and ideas to create a sample Moodle course. You can later choose the resources and activities that you feel will be effective in your course (copying over the items that you find most beneficial, to your real course shell).

We will cover:

  • Setting the format and theme of your course
  • Instructor Welcome and Introduction to the course site
  • Basic course navigation and layout
  • Online Moodle profiles
  • Personal Introductions area
  • Social Lounge
  • Important Course dates (ideas for making them visible to students)
  • Frequently Asked Questions glossary for students
  • Easy access to help and resources
  • Ways to get feedback from your students

Prerequisites: Participants must have taken the Moodle 101: Fundamentals workshop (or Moodle 101A and 101B online), and should be familiar with basic tools of Moodle such as uploading files, adding labels, composing web pages, etc.

Moodle 201: Feedback & Glossary

Moodle 201: Feedback & Glossary

This workshop explores use and best practices of the Feedback and Glossary activities in Moodle. The Feedback activity allows you to create a survey to gather students' opinions on a topic, while the Glossary activity allows you to create a glossary of terms related to your course, or create a bank of FAQs, useful websites, quotations, and more.

We will cover:

  • How to add the Feedback activity and common uses
  • How to create basic feedback questions (such as multiple choice, short answer, and more)
  • How to review and analyze feedback responses
  • Uses of the Glossary activity
  • How to add a Glossary activity and allow for student contributions
  • Use of the Random Glossary Entry block

Moodle 201: Integrating Rich Media

Moodle 201: Integrating Rich Media

How can you make your Moodle course more engaging for students? Can you do this and never upload a single file into your Moodle course?

You will have fun learning:

  • How to edit and include your own audio/video/graphics using third party providers
  • How to author your own video using easy to learn online tools like Animoto
  • How to create interactive forums with VoiceThreads
  • How to include third party videos from such places as YouTube
  • What RSS feeds are and demonstrate how to include them in your course side blocks

Prerequisites: Participants in this workshop should have taken the Moodle 101: Fundamentals (formerly Let's Moodle: Getting Started) workshop or be familiar with basic content and communication tools in Moodle. Participants should be able to save and retrieve files on a computer, upload, and download files from their computer to Moodle.

Moodle 301: Collaboration Tools (Online)              NEW!

Moodle 301: Collaboration Tools

This online workshop explores Moodle activities that can be used to foster collaboration among your students.

We will cover:

  • How to create groups (and group activities) in Moodle
  • How to create discussion forums
  • Common forum types and uses
  • How to create an OU Wiki and possible uses
  • Use of OU Blogs

Moodle 301: Setting up a Basic Gradebook

Moodle 301: setting up a basic gradebook

This workshop will review some of the basics of using Moodle's gradebook, and walk you through the steps for organizing a gradebook that allows for weighted assignments and categories. If your grading scheme is set up similar to the example below, this workshop is for you:

Assignments: 40%
          Assignment 1: 10% (marked out of 9)
          Assignment 2: 20% (marked out of 9)
          Assignment 3: 10% (marked out of 15)
Tests: 60%
          Midterm: 20% (marked out of 50)
          Final Exam: 40% (marked out of 80)

We will cover:

  • How to organize a gradebook that will work for a grading scheme similar to the one above
  • Creating an assignment
  • Entering and editing grades
  • Releasing/hiding grades from students
  • Exporting your grades to Microsoft Excel

Prerequisites: Participants must have taken the Moodle 101: Fundamentals workshop (or Moodle 101A and 101B online) and should be familiar with how to create an assignment in Moodle (Dropbox, Online text submission, etc.).

Prerequisites

Are there any prerequisites?

Although it is not necessary to complete the workshops in a particular order, we do highly recommend that you complete the Moodle 101: Fundamentals (formerly Let's Moodle: Getting Started) workshop before progressing to any of the workshops in the 200 or 300 level. The workshops in the 300 level are considered more advanced than those at the 200 level.

If you are brand new to Moodle, and looking for a basic first introduction to Moodle and how to prepare your course resources, you might consider first starting with Moodle 099: Pre-Planning (formerly Planning to Use Moodle).

Where are the workshops held?

Workshops are held in our classroom, located in the lower level of the Mearns Centre for Learning/McPherson Library (LIBR 034). For detailed directions, take a look at our location map.

Note: any workshops that are marked as "online" are instead held through Moodle, and all work is self-paced.

To register for a workshop, check out our upcoming offerings. Simply log into our support website (top right corner) and click on the green check mark located at the top right or bottom of the workshop registration page. You will receive a confirmation e-mail.

What if I can't attend?

If you can't attend, we would greatly appreciate it if you could withdraw yourself from the workshop online so that others can register. If this is not possible, please contact Moodle Support.
