Moodle contains a wide range of Activity Modules that are represented by icons as shown in the examples below. Your instructor will determine which Activity Modules will best facilitate the learning environment for your course. The icons will appear in your centre block course area, along with a name directly beside it.
To access any activity in your course, just click on its name.
If you encounter any problems when responding within any activity, you must contact your instructor BEFORE contacting Moodle Support.
Assignments: Tasks that require you to prepare work on your computer (Word docs, PDF's, Videos) and then upload this work to the assignment area. Depending on instructions from your instructor, these types of tasks will vary. Typical assignments include essays, projects, reports and so on. This activity may also include grading of the assignment, which can be sent back to you entirely online.
Chat: Online Chat allows participants to have a real-time synchronous discussion via the web. This is a useful way to get a different understanding of each other and the topic being discussed. instructors may post several chats throughout the course, and assign chat times for students. All online chat is recorded for the instructor to review later if they wish.
Discussion Forums:This activity can be the most important, and one that instructors use a lot. Forums can be structured in a variety different ways, so pay close attention to instructions given by the instructor. Posts can be viewed in a variety of formats, and can include attachments. By subscribing to a forum, participants will receive copies of each new posting in their email. The two most widely used forums are the general forum and the single simple discussion forum. The general forum is an open forum where any one can start a new topic at any time. The single simple discussion forum is where you might post a discussion response to a question posed by the instructor. Students in the class are then usually required to comment on a specific number of posts.
Quizzes: Instructors may post online quizzes throughout the course to test student knowledge. Many times these are used as self assessment/practice tests, but some instructors may attach marks to this activity.
Wiki: Enables participants to work together on web pages to add, expand and change the content. Only one person can edit a page at a time, but it is an excellent collaboration tool that you may see.
Feedback: Allows instructors to create and conduct surveys to collect feedback from Students. The Feedback activity is non-gradable, although may be a course requirement.
Choice: is very simple. The instructor asks a question and specifies a choice of multiple responses. It can be useful as a quick poll to stimulate thinking about a topic or to allow the class to vote on a direction for the course.
Glossary: Allows students (or the instructor) to create and maintain a course glossary of terms. There are four different types of glossaries that an instructor can configure for your use.
Please note that the icons will vary, depending on what theme (look and feel) the instructor has chosen for the course.
