Welcome to the Learning Systems support area for students.

Moodle is an open source learning platform that can be used to supplement a face-to-face course or deliver a course online. Generally, our instructors use this learning management system as a course supplement (except Distance Education, which is fully online).

Before you enter UVic Moodle, there are several things to check to make your experience as smooth as possible.

  • You must have a Netlink ID to access your online course component. If you have not applied/received your Netlink information, please access the automated application procedure website. Please be aware that if you have just registered for a course, it will take 48 hours for you to be added to the online component.
  • Check your computer to make sure it is compatible. Access our browser check to see if you meet the minimum computer requirements for online courses.

  • Online Orientation. Complete our online orientation for students (approx 15 minutes). This provides you with a basic orientation on accessing and using Moodle at UVic. Click the video image to the right.

First Online Course Experience?

If this is your first online course you are about to encounter a whole new way of learning and one that will be much more connected than you might anticipate.

  • It helps if you are self directed, like reading, enjoy communicating, and building an online learning community.
  • Don't procrastinate and keep in touch regularly and often with your instructor and other students. Waiting until a deadline to complete an online assignment is not a good idea - what if you encounter computer or connection problems?
  • As every course is structured differently, read information you will receive from your instructor carefully so you know what is expected of you, and get off to a good start.
  • An online course is a shared experience and you as a student can make contributions and suggestions to shape and build your learning experience. Let your instructor know if you experience difficulties.

Accessing Your Courses

  1. You access UVic Moodle at: http://moodle.uvic.ca
  2. On that page located on the left hand side, you will see a login area. This is where you will enter your Netlink ID and password.
  3. Once logged in, you reach your UVicMoodle page. This is where your list of available courses will be. If you do not see your course, it either means the course is not yet available to students, or that your instructor has decided not to use Moodle at this time.
  4. Click on the course name to want to enter and you will be sent to the course site. Only you, your fellow students, instructor, and selected support staff, have access to your course site.
  5. If you encounter problems within the course, always contact your instructor first.

Example Course Page

Most Moodle course pages are made up of three columns (although sometimes instructors may modify the view to two columns). The left column contains small boxes called blocks that are mostly of administrative or navigation in nature. The right column has blocks that are mostly of an informative nature, while the middle column contains course materials and activity tools.

It is always up to the instructor how the course is designed, and what it contains.

Important Information

  • If you change your NetLink ID and/or password at any time, Moodle cannot enroll you in your correct course, or will not allow you to login. Contact the Computer Help Desk immediately to resolve this issue.
  • If you cannot access your course. Check with your instructor that it is accessible to students. While we applaud you for trying to start reading content early, most instructors do not allow access to online components until after the course has started. It is up to the instructor to allow student access.

We are presently working on extensive online support documentation and video's for students. This will become available as we complete them. In the meantime, access our FAQ section. If you have questions specifically related to your course and its content, please contact your instructor directly.
